ORIGIN
A fortress estate is a fascinating blend of agricultural life and defensive architecture, standing as a symbol of resilience in what used to be a rugged and remote landscape. Picture it nestled atop a hill between Torrita di Siena and Montefollonico village, overlooking the Tuscan valleys, the rolling hills and fields it protects.
The stone walls are thick and weathered, built not only to withstand the elements but also to serve as a fortress in times of conflict. This was no ordinary estate; it was a place where the land and the people who tended it were intertwined with both the rhythms of nature and the need for security. Its central watchtower is a reminder of the estate’s dual purpose. In times past, it would have been manned by guards, keeping a watchful eye over the land and alert for any approaching threats. Today, they stand as a historical nod to the farm’s layered past, where agriculture and warfare coexisted.
This is Borgo Oppiano, erected in Tuscany in 1037 and standing proudly for centuries, having witnessed generations come and go, telling stories of conquest, life lived slowly, of hard work under the Tuscan sun.
PURPOSE
In 2017, Oppiano ruins were entrusted by history to a visionary new owner with a profound love and admiration for this land, who is now tirelessly bringing it back to its ancient glory. An endeavour that combines ecological restoration, cultural heritage preservation, and sustainable agriculture.
Surrounding the fortress, for 300 acres, is once again a network of terraced fields, vineyards and olive and hazelnut groves claimed back from wilderness. In the distance, cypress trees line the horizon. The surrounding woods yield generously white and black truffles. Dawns and sunsets from Borgo Oppiano are simply magnificent. The labor in between is hard, but the rewards are tangible; life is simple yet rich.
Amidst the complexities of the modern world, Tenuta Oppiano remains to this day a peaceful and secure oasis, offering a sense of stability, protection, self-sufficiency and timelessness.
HARVEST
The soil of our vineyards is the soul of our wines, a vital force that shapes each bottle with exceptional quality. Spread across 12.5 hectares, our vineyards rise gently between 310 and 470 meters above sea level, where the land’s altitude and exposure meet to nurture the grapes. The soil here is a rich and diverse tapestry—sands, clay-rich layers, volcanic sands, and mineral-rich fronts come together to create a unique terroir mix. Each of these elements weaves a distinct character into the wine, providing it with depth, structure, and a deep, almost sacred connection to the land.
In a tribute to Dante Alighieri’s Divina Commedia, all of our vineyards and wines are named with literary homage. Just as Dante faced daunting beasts on his journey, we, too, confronted formidable challenges in selecting, restoring, and reviving these historic lands. The vineyard names, such as Minosse, Cerbero, Pluto, and Furie, symbolize these very trials. In honour of this epic journey, our wines take their names from the Divina Commedia, referencing the symbolic circles (gironi) and spheres (cerchi) in which Dante’s masterpiece was arranged. Much like Dante’s voyage, each wine unfolds a new level of complexity, depth, and discovery, inviting you to explore its rich narrative.
